Dream Analysis and Interpretation
Tuesday, 08 August 2006

All people at several points in their lives wonder about the significance of dreams. Do dreams serve as an interpretation of the current mind state or is it an interpretation of things to come? One reason why dreams are so fascinating is because of plain curiosity. People are so curious regarding the real function of dreams. They are hungry for the answer to a question that has been bugging them since humans first woke up.

It is possible to be a DIY in dream interpretation. The draw back of doing it yourself is missing some detail or variation that can affect the interpretation of a dream segment. Wood is not wood and money is not money when dreaming.  Interpreting dream details is always dependent on the situation of the dream, the context, the background, foremost color and a lot of other subtle factors that only dream professionals are aware of.

Anyway, if you want to give it a shot, the first thing you have to do is to remember the dream. Immediately after waking, run the dream through your head again and again. Because the dream comes from the subconscious, the conscious mind will not have any memory of the dream after a few minutes pass by. You have to transfer the dream from the subconscious to the conscious mind to avoid losing the dream.

Write down details of the dream as soon as possible. Don’t wait for memory to cloud the dream as you might interpret or remember things differently. Remember to write down objects, moods, colors, personalities and the general theme of the dream.

You must interpret your dreams in a quiet, secluded and tranquil area where no distractions can bother you. This is essential to interpretation because as you begin the process, fragments of the dream may return and contradict several things you might have written down. You will need your full concentration on weeding out truth from false memory.

Use your intuition as you review your dream notes and try to make sense of your dream. You may already know on an instinctual level what your dreams are trying to tell you. Connecting with your intuition can help you connect with your unconscious mind. If you meditate, a short meditation session can often be a big help.  Connecting with your inner self is always a huge help when it comes to interpreting and analyzing dreams.

Ø      As you review your dream notes, pay close attention to the emotions they stir in you.  Paying close attention to your emotional state, both at this moment and during the dream, can help you to understand what your dream really meant.

Ø      Think very carefully about any vivid details, situations, locations, sensations or symbols that make the dream memorable.  Open your heart as well as your mind and carefully explore the possible meaning of each symbol, situation and event.  It may be helpful to jot down the impressions in your dream journal or notebook.  As you search for meaning, don’t limit yourself to obvious interpretations.  For instance, dreaming about a missed appointment could simply mean you are worried about being late for work, but that missed appointment could also symbolize a feeling of missed opportunity in your life.

Ø      Running an inner dialog with the people or objects you dreamed about is often helpful as well.  This inner dialog is especially useful when trying to determine why you dreamed about certain people.  Try asking them in your head “why am I dreaming about you?”, “what are you doing in my dream?”.   It is also helpful to know that often people in our dreams are symbols of aspects of our own personality instead of literal people.

Ø      If you are stuck for an interpretation, it is a good idea to leave your dream notebook and come back to it later.  It may also be helpful to discuss the dream with others, or to consult an expert on dream interpretation.

Each dream is unique. There are no templates to speak of. An action can be repeated a hundred times and each of those actions can have a hundred interpretations. Keep in mind that the person who should know more about the dream is you because it came from you. Your subconscious played the dream and it gives you an advantage in utilizing instinct and gut feel for a situation.
